About Love The Labrador

Real Experience, Honest Advice From 35+ Years of Lab Ownership

Hi, I’m Rhys, and for over 35 years, I’ve dedicated my life to understanding Labrador Retrievers. What started as childhood love for my first yellow Lab, Molly, has evolved into three decades of hands-on experience, thousands of real-world challenges solved, and a mission to help families navigate the beautiful chaos of Lab ownership.

Why My Advice Is Different (And More Trustworthy)

Unlike generic dog websites written by content teams, every piece of advice on Love The Labrador comes from lived experience. I don’t just research Labrador behavior—I’ve survived it, adapted to it, and learned from it across three very different Lab personalities.

What Sets My Experience Apart:

  • Real financial investment: I’ve spent thousands learning what works (and what’s marketing hype)
  • Multiple life stages: From bachelor life with Matilda to family chaos with Luna and four kids
  • Honest failures: I share what didn’t work, not just success stories
  • Long-term perspective: 35 years of watching Labs grow, change, and age
  • Individual differences: Experience with calm farm Labs, high-energy swimmers, and protective family guardians

My Labrador Story

My life with Labradors started in childhood. Each of my Labs has taught me unique lessons and given my family endless joy. Here’s a bit about my journey with each of my beloved Labs.

Molly (Yellow Lab, 1988-2005): The Foundation Years

17 years together | Rural farm life | My childhood companion

Molly taught me that Labs are individuals first, breed characteristics second. Growing up on our family farm, she demonstrated the gentle protectiveness that makes Labs exceptional family dogs. Her 17-year lifespan gave me deep understanding of senior Lab care, end-of-life decisions, and the long-term commitment Lab ownership requires.

Matilda (Yellow Lab, 2005-2014): The Adventure Years

9 years together | Young adult lifestyle | Beach and swimming expert

Matilda joined my life at 18 and accompanied me through major life transitions: leaving home, meeting my wife, career changes, and becoming a father. Her sudden passing at age 9 taught me painful lessons about health monitoring and the importance of preventive veterinary care.

Luna (Black Lab, 2016-Present): The Family Integration Expert

8+ years together | Family life with 4 children | Current hands-on experience

Luna represents my most documented Lab experience. As our family grew from 2 to 4 children, Luna adapted, learned, and occasionally challenged our patience. Her story includes successful integration with babies, managing resource guarding, addressing dog reactivity after negative encounters, and ongoing behavioral modification work.

Current real-world challenges:

  • Dog reactivity management: Working with professional trainers to rebuild confidence after aggressive dog encounter
  • Multi-child household dynamics: Managing 35kg dog with children ages 2-11
  • Ongoing training: Continuous adaptation as family needs evolve
  • Product testing: Luna serves as real-world tester for all recommended products

Grab A Chair And Check Out Our Stuff

If Rhys can coax Luna out of the swimming pool, they should be working on some articles about all the important stuff like Labrador Retriever health, Lab diet, Labrador toys, Labrador Retriever behavior, Labrador this, Labrador that, and other helpful Labrador products that we have discovered along the way that have made our lives that little bit better.

Labrador Dog Gifts

Ho Ho Ho - Presents For Your Pooch

Labradors are so good that they deserve treats, gifts, presents, pats, bones, and did I say treats? Luna has been busy taste-testing all the treats to let you know what’s bad or good. Luna stands by her claims that all presents are ‘Lab Tested’ (never trust a toy that says it’s “chew proof”) We also have birthday presents and Christmas gifts for the Labrador owners too!
